BÖIKZMÖIND started life in 2008, originally just as a 10 minute short that was going to be submitted to the BFF (Bicycle Film Festival) but instead of capping it at 10 minutes, that filming continued on as the Bristol scene started to grow. In a short space of time the number of fixed gear riders had risen from a handful to a small army.
It was in this ever changing scene that BÖIKZMÖIND started to take shape. Local events put on by local riders started bringing like minded people together, cyclists from all walks of life, from hipster to hippy, father to son. All brought together by a love of a bare bones single geared machine. Alleycats, hill climbs, film nights, audax’s, polo matches. The variety of events that were being put on grew continuously and with that brought yet more people into the wonderful world of fixed gear.
It was at this point that I started interviewing these riders, delving into their reasons behind riding a bike with no gears in a city that’s made entirely of hills. Thats what I want this film to be, to answer the questions “What’s a fixed gear bike” and “So, what’s Bristol like then?” by giving an insight into the broad range of people that ride around and have fun in this city. Ultimately though, I just want to make a film that looks beautiful and will make you want to get outside on two wheels.

Music by
Invada Records
Music is a critical part of any film and BOIKZMOIND is no exception. I come from a background of making skateboard edits where quite often the the entire video would be cut around the tempo of the music but with the narrative of the interviews taking the audio centre stage its a different kettle of fish entirely. This is where the magic of Invada Records comes in. Invada is the brainchild of Bristol musical legend Geoff Barrow (Portishead, Beak) and his partner Fat Paul, who set up the label in 2003 with a diverse roster of artists from Thought Forms to Gonga.
So I am very proud to announce that Invada will be providing the soundtrack to the film, curated by fixed gear rider and label manager Redg Weeks, who when isn’t managing Invada, riding his bike or being a family man, puts on the famed ‘No Gears’ fixie film nights here in Bristol. It’s this partnership with the legendary south west-based music collective that will add a unique layer to the film that I personally cannot wait to hear and I’m the one making the film!
